Choose the permission before you choose a visa name
Prepared by the Alsama advisory team. Last updated: 2026-07-17. Sources accessed: 2026-07-17. Methodology: route-selection guidance checked against current UAE Government and ICP pages; dates and direct links sit beside consequential claims.
The fastest route decision usually begins with seven facts, not a popular visa label. Write down the purpose, expected duration, sponsor position, work location, strongest evidence, issuing emirate and current nationality. Purpose means the real activity: taking a holiday, joining a resident family member, studying, working for a UAE employer, continuing a job outside the UAE, retiring, receiving treatment or attending a hosted event. Duration matters, but it cannot turn a visit category into residence. A sponsor may be an employer, educational institution, resident family member, event host or medical facility. Some qualifying residence routes do not use that kind of sponsor, yet they still have category-specific evidence and review.
The official UAE Government framework lists route families that include Golden Residency, employment, remote work, Blue Residency, exploration of investment opportunities, retirement, Green Residency, medical treatment, study, GCC-related entry, family, tourism and transit. The list is a navigation framework. It does not establish that each option fits every nationality or circumstance. See the official overview of residence and visa route families, accessed 17 July 2026.
Use a one-page intake note before collecting documents:
| Decision fact | What to record | Why it changes the route |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | Entry or residence | These are different legal products |
| Activity | Work, family, study, visit, treatment, event, retirement or exploration | Each category asks for its own evidence |
| Sponsor | Named sponsor, host or no sponsor | It determines who supports the filing |
| Work location | UAE employer or employer outside the UAE | Remote work is not ordinary local employment |
| Evidence | Contract, family record, host letter, enrolment or facility file | The route must match evidence already available |
| Emirate | Dubai or another issuing jurisdiction | Channel and procedure may differ |
| Nationality | Passport held on the filing date | Entry eligibility can change by nationality |
Do not begin with the longest duration or the most familiar marketing name. Begin with the activity that will actually take place. If the activity and evidence disagree, pause before paying or booking travel.
Entry permission and residence permission solve different problems
An entry visa or entry permit answers whether a person may enter for a stated temporary or pre-residence purpose. A residence permit answers whether that person may live in the UAE under a qualifying category. The words are often used casually as if they mean the same thing, which creates expensive mistakes. Tourism, visiting, treatment, event attendance and transit belong on the entry side. Employment, family sponsorship, study and qualifying self-sponsored programmes sit on the residence side, although a residence process may also involve an entry step.
The ICP visa service separates purposes such as tourism, visiting, treatment and pre-residence entry, and it assigns documents and fees by the selected category. That is why a document shown for one entry purpose should not be carried into another as though it were universal. The ICP Issuance of a Visa service, accessed 17 July 2026, is the direct place to inspect the selected category. It does not convert a temporary visit into residence.
Duration is useful only after the category is correct. The current federal general provisions say sponsored residence can be issued for one, two or three years, while qualifying residence without a sponsor can be issued for five or ten years. These are possible periods, not a universal entitlement. The exact route decides which period applies, and renewal depends on the conditions in force when the holder renews. See the UAE Government general residence provisions, updated in 2026 and accessed 17 July 2026.
A practical test helps. If the immediate goal ends when the trip ends, begin in the entry branch. If the person expects to live, hold a resident identity record, sponsor eligible family or remain under an employment, study or qualifying self-sponsored basis, examine a residence branch. A person attending a conference for several days should not select a residence route merely because it lasts longer. A future employee should not use a tourist category as a substitute for the employer-supported residence process. A patient should follow the treatment entry category and facility evidence rather than searching for a vague medical residence label.
When the plan contains two phases, show both separately: permission to enter, then the residence action that follows if the residence category is accepted. This keeps checklists, charges and timing questions attached to the right stage.
A route matrix for the decision you need to make now
The matrix below directs the next research step. It does not decide eligibility. Read across one row, verify the evidence named by the official channel and use the linked Alsama guide for route-specific detail.
| Your present purpose | First route family to inspect | Sponsor or supporting party | Boundary to keep clear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work for a UAE employer | Employer-sponsored work and residence | UAE employer | The job and employer process drive the route |
| Skilled, freelance or self-employed residence without a conventional sponsor | Green Residency | Category evidence rather than an employer sponsor | Use the UAE Green Visa requirements guide for detailed conditions |
| Long-term qualified investor, talent or humanitarian category | Golden Residency | Recommendation or qualifying evidence may apply by subcategory | Use the Dubai Golden Visa guide; do not assume one subcategory's evidence fits another |
| Continue working for an employer outside the UAE | Remote-work residence | Evidence of outside-UAE work | Use the UAE digital nomad and remote-work guide |
| Retire and reside | Retirement residence | Route-specific financial and personal evidence | Use the UAE retirement visa guide |
| Join an eligible resident family member | Family residence | Resident family sponsor | Relationship, sponsor capacity and emirate rules matter |
| Study | Student residence | Educational institution | Enrolment does not become an employment route |
| Receive treatment | Treatment entry | Medical or health facility evidence | This is not a long-term medical residence category |
| Holiday, visit or transit | Relevant temporary entry category | Host or carrier details may depend on category | Check nationality and selected purpose live |
| Attend a qualifying hosted event | Events Visit Visa | Eligible host organisation and event letter | Temporary attendance, not residence |
| Explore investment or business opportunities | Exploration entry category | Evidence depends on the selected ICP category | Exploration is not the same as investor residence |
Two neighbouring routes can both sound plausible. Resolve that ambiguity with evidence. Someone who owns a company but works under a UAE company file may need a company-linked or investor pathway, while a person whose employment remains outside the UAE should examine remote-work residence. A skilled employee who wants a longer self-sponsored basis should first check whether the facts satisfy Green Residency rather than merely preferring its duration. A property or business interest should be examined under the exact investment-linked route, not treated as a single generic investor visa. The Dubai investor visa guide provides the next level of detail for that separate intent.
If no row describes the real activity, do not force the nearest one. Record the gap and confirm the current category with the official channel. Route names used in social posts often collapse an entry permission, a residence permit and a Golden Residency subcategory into one phrase. The official category on the application matters more than the informal name.
Sponsored residence: employment, study and family are separate files
Sponsored residence begins with a supporting relationship, but the relationship changes the route. An employer supports an employment file. An educational institution supports a study file. A resident family member may support eligible relatives. These are not interchangeable sponsorships, and one sponsor's documents do not establish another route.
For employment, identify the legal employer, the issuing jurisdiction and the work relationship before gathering personal papers, then check the current service for the exact category before relying on any salary threshold, occupation list or approval time. For study, confirm the institution's role and the selected student category. For family, start with the sponsor's valid residence, current income and qualifying relationship, then verify the procedure for the emirate.
The current federal family summary generally permits a resident sponsor to sponsor family with a monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. It states coverage for a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs. The relationship wording matters. It should not be extended to parents or other relatives without checking the specific rules that apply to them. The official summary also needs to be checked against the applicant's emirate and filing channel. Read the UAE Government family residence page, updated 27 February 2026 and accessed 17 July 2026.
The useful family checklist is shorter than many generic document packs:
- Identify the resident sponsor and confirm the sponsor's current status.
- State the exact relationship to each family applicant.
- Check whether the federal relationship summary covers that person.
- Test the sponsor's salary and accommodation facts against the current rule.
- Prepare the relevant civil records and any authentication required by the filing channel.
- Confirm adult medical, security and identity steps for each residence applicant.
- Recheck the chosen emirate with ICP or GDRFA before filing.
A broad Dubai family residency guide can help organise the family file, but a parent's case or another relative's case should not be inferred from the spouse and child summary above. The route should be named after the qualifying relationship, not after the applicant's preferred duration.
Self-sponsored and longer-horizon routes need a category match
A residence route without a conventional employer or family sponsor is not a free-form residence option. Green Residency, Golden Residency, retirement residence and remote-work residence serve different profiles. Their evidence, conditions and renewal tests remain separate. The federal duration summary says qualifying unsponsored residence can be five or ten years, but it does not make every applicant eligible for either period.
Use these compact distinctions, then move to the child page rather than building a mixed document pack here:
- Green Residency is one route to inspect when the facts point to a qualifying self-sponsored category. ICP's current page sets a AED 15,000 minimum monthly salary for the skilled-worker test and requires at least AED 360,000 in freelance income over its stated two-year test for the freelancer/self-employed category (ICP Green Residency, page updated 23 March 2026, accessed 17 July 2026). The detailed Green Residency guide covers the full eligibility and evidence for each category.
- Golden Residency contains distinct qualifying subcategories, including investment and exceptional-talent paths. Its real-estate-investment subcategory currently lists a five-year residence category tied to ownership of one or more properties valued at AED 2 million or more (ICP Golden Residency, accessed 17 July 2026). A recommendation or category-specific evidence in one subcategory is not proof for another; the Golden Residency guide walks through each subcategory on its own terms.
- Retirement residence answers a retirement decision on the relevant route's own personal and financial evidence; the retirement residence guide carries the detailed requirements and costs.
- Remote-work residence concerns a person who continues to work for an employer or business outside the UAE rather than taking local employment or freelance work inside it. The remote-work residence guide sets out the filing evidence.
The official route framework also lists Blue Residency as its own separate category. Alsama does not yet publish a dedicated guide for it, so confirm its current qualifying basis directly on the official UAE Government route framework page rather than assuming a sustainability-related profile automatically fits. The same discipline applies to investment-exploration entry and investor residence: the former supports a temporary purpose, while the latter must be examined under its specific residence basis.
A clean comparison sheet has four columns: category name, activity allowed or supported, evidence already held and evidence still missing. Leave fees and processing periods blank until the direct service card for the exact category is checked. There is no universal fee or end-to-end time across these routes; the official ICP service separates selected categories and their requirements.
People often select a route by duration, then try to reshape their facts around it. Reverse that order. Select the category that describes the actual activity and evidence. Only then compare duration, family implications and renewal conditions. Long duration never makes renewal automatic, and residence does not by itself establish citizenship.
Temporary entry: tourism, visits, transit, treatment, events and exploration
Temporary entry categories need the same care as residence routes. Tourism, a personal visit, transit, treatment, event attendance and exploration of business or investment opportunities are different purposes. The selected ICP category controls its supporting evidence and fees. A host letter for an event cannot be treated as a medical facility letter, and a treatment file cannot be used as a general long-stay residence basis.
Nationality is the first live check. Eligibility for visa on arrival or the need for an advance visa varies by nationality and can change. A static country list copied into an evergreen guide will age badly. Instead, use the UAE Government live entry checker, updated 16 February 2026 and accessed 17 July 2026. Check again before ticketing because passport, category and current rule all matter. The checker answers an entry question; it does not establish residence eligibility.
Treatment entry belongs to the selected medical category. ICP requires the medical or health-facility evidence listed for that category. Confirm whether the application concerns a patient or companion, then inspect the documents and duration inside the selected service. The ICP visa issuance service, accessed 17 July 2026, lists the selected category evidence. Do not describe this as a long-term medical residence route.
Events Visit Visa is another temporary category. ICP introduced it for attendance at qualifying cultural, sports, religious, community, educational and similar events. The file requires an eligible host organisation and an event letter. The ICP visit-category announcement, published in 2025 and accessed 17 July 2026, explains the category boundary. Attendance at a sports event does not turn it into an athlete residence visa.
For tourism, visiting, transit and exploration, select the purpose exactly as it appears in the current official service. Avoid combining document lists. If the trip changes purpose before travel, restart the route check instead of assuming the original entry permission covers the new activity. For a deeper distinction between an entry step and a Dubai residence file, see the Dubai entry-permit service guide.
Marriage and family residence: validity is not immigration status
Marriage does not create an automatic standalone UAE residence grant. Two questions must be answered separately. Is the marriage valid and documented for the relevant personal-status or civil process? Does the resident sponsor and family applicant satisfy the current family-residence rules and evidence requirements? A positive answer to the first question does not decide the second.
The current official family route still relies on sponsorship, relationship evidence and the applicable residence process. The federal salary summary is AED 4,000 monthly, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, and the relationship summary includes a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs. Those statements come from the UAE Government family residence guidance, updated 27 February 2026 and accessed 17 July 2026. The applicant should verify the current emirate procedure with ICP or GDRFA.
For non-Muslim civil and personal-status context, use the UAE Government civil-marriage information, accessed 17 July 2026. That page helps with the civil-status side. It should not be quoted as if it were a residence approval page. Conversely, the family residence page does not replace checking whether the marriage record is valid, complete and usable in the chosen channel.
A sensible file index keeps the two evidence sets apart:
- Civil-status set: the marriage record and any validity, authentication or translation steps requested by the competent channel.
- Sponsor set: the resident sponsor's status, salary and accommodation evidence as applicable.
- Applicant set: passport and personal records for the spouse applying.
- Residence set: the filing, adult medical and security steps, Emirates ID process and any emirate-specific requirements.
Avoid phrases such as marriage visa when they imply that the ceremony itself creates status. Family residence is the more accurate branch. The sponsor remains responsible for meeting the route conditions, and later renewal still requires a current qualifying basis. If the intended applicant is a parent or another relative, pause. The federal summary cited here does not support extending the spouse and child rules to those relationships.
Birth, athlete and volunteer labels: three corrections
A child born in the UAE to expatriate parents does not acquire automatic citizenship merely because the birth happened in the country. Keep the next actions practical: register the birth, obtain the child's passport through the relevant national process and complete the appropriate residence steps. The UAE Government general residence provisions, accessed 17 July 2026, support the need to complete the residence process. Birth alone cannot settle broader nationality-law questions.
The phrase athlete visa also needs correction. The official framework does not present a broad standalone athlete residence route. Athletes may appear in the exceptional-talent subcategory of Golden Residency, where the relevant recommendation from the General Sports Authority or a sports council is required. The ICP Golden Residency page, published in 2026 and accessed 17 July 2026, is the direct source. The practical next step is to test the exact exceptional-talent subcategory, not search for a generic sports visa. For detailed Golden Residency requirements, use the Alsama Golden Residency guide.
Sports event attendance is different again. A qualifying hosted event may use Events Visit Visa, which is temporary entry. It needs an eligible host and event letter. Competing professionally, working for a sports organisation, being nominated as exceptional talent and attending a tournament as a visitor are four different fact patterns. The label sports visa is too loose to decide among them.
Volunteering is not a standalone residence visa either. ICP's Golden Residency material includes a humanitarian-pioneer subcategory where official evidence can cover the listed service or hours conditions. Meeting a number of volunteer hours alone does not guarantee approval. The applicant still needs the correct subcategory and supporting evidence, and ICP reviews the file. Use the ICP Golden Residency source, accessed 17 July 2026, rather than an informal volunteer-visa checklist.
These corrections point to one habit: translate an informal label into the current official category before collecting documents. Birth, sport and service can be relevant facts, but none should be treated as an automatic status trigger.
Prepare one clean route file and know when to pause
A route file should make the category obvious to someone who did not attend the first conversation. Put a one-sentence purpose statement on the cover, followed by the selected category, sponsor or supporting party, intended emirate and evidence index. Do not mix documents from neighbouring routes simply because they sound useful. A clean file is easier to correct before submission and easier to recheck when an official service changes.
For residence applicants aged 18 or over, the federal general provisions generally include medical fitness, security checks and Emirates ID steps, subject to route and jurisdiction. See the official general residence provisions, updated in 2026 and accessed 17 July 2026. These common steps do not erase category differences, and an entry visa is still not the final residence permit.
Use this preparation checklist:
- State the current purpose and category in plain words.
- Run the live nationality check for entry.
- Identify the sponsor, host, facility, institution or category evidence.
- Check passport validity and the civil records relevant to the route.
- Separate residence applicants aged 18 or over for medical, security and Emirates ID planning.
- Name the issuing emirate and confirm whether ICP, GDRFA or another competent channel handles the step.
- For family files, match each applicant to the exact relationship rule and evidence.
- Open the live service card for documents and fees just before filing.
- Record assumptions that still need official confirmation.
- Keep renewal as a later eligibility check, not an automatic continuation.
- If a status is cancelled or an employment ends, treat the next step as urgent: confirm the current grace period, any applicable fine and the lawful next action with ICP or GDRFA before the period lapses.
Pause if the team cannot say whether entry or residence is needed. Pause if the route name came only from social media. Pause when no live nationality check has been run, when marriage or birth is being treated as automatic status, when volunteering is being called a residence route, or when a medical visit is being sold as long-term residence. Also stop when requirements from Green Residency, Golden Residency, retirement or remote work have been merged into one checklist.
A second review is worthwhile when the intended work activity and the chosen route do not match. It is also sensible when the person expects automatic renewal, when the sponsor relationship is unclear or when the issuing emirate has not been selected. The goal is not to collect the largest possible bundle. It is to produce the smallest complete bundle for the correct category.

For a later decision, recheck three items even if the overall framework looks familiar: nationality-based entry permission, the current service card for the selected category and the emirate-specific filing channel. For family residence, recheck the sponsor facts and relationship at that time. For a route without a conventional sponsor, recheck the exact category evidence and renewal basis.
Sources are used here for route selection and stated boundaries only. They are not evidence that an individual will qualify, that an application will be accepted or that a residence period will renew. A current official page can describe a category without deciding a particular file. The application still needs facts, evidence and the competent authority's review.
